If We Teach a Man. We Teach an Individual. If We Teach a Woman, We Teach The Whole Family

Education is means to achieve harmonious development of the personality of a person. In the words of Socrates "The purpose of education is to dispel error and discover truth". T.P> Nunn defines education as "development of individual so that he can make original contribution to human life according to his best capacity." "Natural, harmonious and progressive to development of innate power is education." said pestalozzi. To professor james, "education is the organisation of acquired habits of action, which will fit the individual to his physical and social environment". Mahatma gandhi held that true education was that which was capable of achieving the objective of all round development of man. Man constitutes the body, the mind and the spirit. The aim of education is to bring about a balanced and harmonious development of the three. It is thus clear, from what has been said above, that the main purpose of education is to develop the latent faculties of the individual and thus enable him to make useful contribution to the betterment of his own self as well the society.

Though much good and useful work can be done even without education, yet it is a fact that education develops the intellect and increases knowledge and thereby multiplies our capacity for service to the society. The importance of education has been recognised all over the world. the age old prejudices against the education of women have disappeared. The light of knowledge is now regarded beneficial to men as well as to women. It was really tyrannical of the male to keep the females uneducated, ignorant and backward, Education is no more considered the exclusive domain of men. Of late there has been rapid expansion of education among women, who have amply shown that they are in no way inferior to men is so far as their mental caliber is concerned.Given adequate facilities and encouragement they can outshine men. The idea is gaining ground that the need for education to women is not less rather more in certain respects, as compared to men. No doubt is most cases men earn livelihood for  the family, while women look after the house hold management, but nature of women's duties calls for superior understanding and more efficient handling. It  is in this context that the importance of providing education to women is being increasingly appreciated. To my view it is the correct attitude, because men have realised that they have done a great harm to women, and still greater to themselves by denying equal opportunity of education to women.

It has been correctly said that " if we teach man. we teach an individual; if we teach a woman, we teach the whole family." It is so because the family is the nuclear cell of society which provides a sound foundation for a purposeful development of individuals, which is claimed to be the ultimate objective of true education. The real progress of any community is possible only when all its members, especially the women whose education is ignored in certain societies, are brought under the umbrella of universal education. It is the height of selfishness of men who fully appreciate the great value, advantage and importance of education in so far as their own case is concerned, but care little for the need of education in the case of women, who are more important than men particularly in the domestics sphere. There can hardly be nay valid argument in favour of the exclusion of the female sect from the privilege of learning. It is no argument that women have their domestics duties to perform, for which education they would busy themselves in books and find little time for attending to the management of their households, is untenable. Man also may neglect their work of duties to spare more time for reading sensational novels. It can be claimed without any fear of contradiction that both men and women are equally liable to neglect their work. It has been observed that education women are able to do their house hold work better. It is no sin if they are able to fine a little leisure for their amusement by reading some useful book, after having performed their domestic duties in a satisfactory manner. On the contrary, education would prove more helpful to them in the performance of their domestic duties.

Education imparts knowledge. Education to women means equipping them with more knowledge to enable them to function effectively in discharge of their duties as responsible and capable persons. Knowledge helps everyone do and understand things properly. So far as men are concerned, it may be said that education helps them become better wage earners, but there are many little things in the home which are more important than a little wage. An educated mother has the advantage of her education to help her bring up children in a better way, an manage house hold affairs more efficiently.

As a matter of fact a woman is something more than a house hold drudge. She ought to be able not only to nurse her husband in sickness but also be his impossible between an educated husband and an uneducated wife because of disparity in their mental development. Then, one of the most important duty of the mother is to educate her children, when they are pre school stage. A child's whole future life, to a large extent, depends on the teaching it receives in really childhood. It is needless to say that this first foundation of education cannot be well laid by an ignorant (uneducated) mother.

A family is a small world itself. There can be no peace and prosperity in the family, unless all the members of the family so desire. Such a desire is possible to be created by the housewife who is supposed to run the administration with great ability which can be acquired through education alone. The father who looks after external affairs can hardly find time to attend to domestic matters. The popular saying " The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world" is true, because history is a witness to the fact that great sons and daughters have almost always sprung from well educated and enlightened mothers. How can a society progress when about 50 per cent of its population is kept steeped in the darkness of ignorance and illiteracy? women as a matter of fact are not only breeding machines and house hold drudges, but the best friend and life companions  of men; they are friends philosophers and guides to the whole family. How can they performs their duties meritoriously, unless they are suitably educated and trained. No family can have bright children, unless the parents and specially the mothers are educated.

The inexhaustible fund of knowledge remains closed to us without education. It is no exaggeration to say that a man without learning is no better than animal. Thus every woman needs education as every man does. It is woman who rule inside the home, man is master outside it. Man earns livelihood , woman saves and spends. Woman is mother. She brings up children. She is responsible for building their character. She is their first teacher. In this sense woman is the mother of the race, while man is not the father or the race. After a certain age the father ceases to influence his child, but not so the mother, who continues to influence the character of the child when it is grown up. It is wrong to keep women in ignorance and under suppression. It is equally wrong to entrust them with the work which is ordinarily done by men. Non observance of this ideal will frustrate the real objective of education to woman and will also deprive the family of the real benefit if her education. Main objection of providing good education to woman is that they should function as our life companions and equal partners in the battle of life, and co-sharers in our happiness and unhappiness. It is this that should be sought to be accomplished and it is unlikely to be achieved unless women are sufficiently equipped to act as our partners in our struggle for resolving the difficulties and problems that face the family.

The guidance that a child needs is a responsibility which has to be shared equally be parents and teachers. The best teacher would be helpless if the child's parents do not cooperate with him. even among the parents, the mother is nearer to any child. To give guidance to children of the modern age, society requires educated mothers, educated in the real sense of the term, who can set an example by their own personal behaviour. many of the problems of children can be solved through proper attention of the mother. there are other factors which are of great importance in the matter of providing education to women. In olden days bringing up children was considered to be an art, which all women possessed, of course, in varying degrees. But now a days it is supposed to be the fields of medicines and hygiene, there are innumerable valuable books available on child psychology, child as a dependable guide to mothers who can learn from them how to bring up their children in a scientific manner, so that they can be healthy, both physically and mentally. healthy children are an asset to their parents, but this is possible only if the mother is educated. Unless and until a mother is educated, she will not be able to play her part efficiently. Cases are not rare when the children suffer  from malnutrition, not because their parents are poor but because their mothers are ignorant of what are high protein diets. In such cases, malnutrition can be easily avoided by educated mothers. An enlightened and educated mother will never allow her children to suffer from such dietary deficiency.

The need of educating women does not require to be over emphasized. If a man is educated, the benefit of education goes to one person only, but if a woman is educated, the benefit is shared by all the members of the family. It is she who brings up the children in such a way that they prove themselves to be worthy citizen of tomorrow and serve the family and the society in a better way. Woman is the mother and maker of the future generation of a country. God has entrusted woman with the raw material with which she can mould the character of a nation. The best utilization of women's education would be if they present the nation with children who are capable of understanding and performing their duties towards themselves as well as their society.

To neglect men's education is a folly, but to neglect women's education is greater folly. A well trained and education mother with a good character is essential for leading the society to the path of progress. The character of a nation is judged by the status and of education of its women. The progress of country is measured by the progress of the females in that country.

Women's education is not necessary for the purpose of getting some employment or high post, though such a need in the modern age cannot be ignored altogether. But all educated women cannot become high officers, executives, and professors. Their education should not be regarded as waste, if they fail to get such positions. it is so because this education will also help every woman to be a good and efficient housewife. Educated women can help their husband and other member of family in their official work and can educate their children during their leisure. It is at home that children learn manners and mothers are mostly responsible for teaching good manners to their children. The duty of woman does not end with giving birth to a number of children, the future of country does not depend on their number but on the quality of human material. Thus educated women can help in improving the quality of characters of the members of a family. Woman has multifarious roles to perform, not only as a companion of man and a source of inspiration to him, but also as a housewife and the most important of all as a mother and a builder of character. It is essential that she should get proper education for the better performance of her domestic duties. It has been rightly said that an educated woman is, to a child, better than a hundred teachers. The educated and conscientious mother who lives and works for her children is their best teacher in the world. There has, therefore, been greater and greater realistion of the fact that by educating a woman one is not merely educating and individual, but producing the means of spreading the results of education through a whole family.

The nucleus of the true progress of a nation lies in the hands of educated mothers. It is the mother's primary duty to inculcate in her child that bread earning alone is not the aim of an individual's life. There is potential divinity in every human soul, and the aim education should be to manifest the divinity in man. If this supreme truth is borne in mind by the mother, her child will grow up to be a citizen in the correct sense of the term.
