Corruption Causes and Cures Part 2

Edmund Burke, the great philosopher and reformer of the 18th century warned "the world of his day that the corrupt influence is the perennial spring of all prodigality and of all disorder, it takes away vigour from our arms, wisdom from our councils, authority and credit from our constitution." It is a fast growing evil that one day will make the nations-engulfed in the arms of this parasite, pass away.

Science then, with the passage of time civilization has advanced, democracy has spread, education has been propagated, all types of folk are on the ladder of emancipation but corruption has continued and even increased beyond measure. There is never any thing devised by the wit of man, which has not been corrupted. Really it is a slow business making a man out of monkey, but its is easy to reverse it.

With the dawn of Independence and the growth of democracy and industry, the opportunities for bribery and palm-greasing have increased greatly. In fact, the time has come when very few eye brows are raised when we are informed of a case of blatant bribery. It has become so common, so usual and so familiar that we indulge in corrupt practices in the sphere of education, government and private service, all branches of administration, trade and commerce and industrial activity.

As matter of fact, honest has become a rarity. Even the shrines of worship are not free from this stigma. Most of our politicians and legislators indulge in it without any qualms of conscience. Even in case of the leaders of the nation it can be said without demur that "The line is too often busy when conscience wishes to speak." Since the first General Elections in the country, if a survey is made, it is difficult to trace a single former M.L.A. or M.P.

Or minister who has not amassed wealth in the form of landed property, Modern Agriculture Farm or Palatial House, or Business Houses, Luxury-Coaches, or Shares in different companies, or Benami Agencies, or indirect sharing in Cinema, House, wine shops or other enterprise, or getting permits or licences for Lustrous modes of earning. every perspective candidate in a general election incurs an expenditure of about one to two lacs. Such a colossal spending is sure to unhinge the very family-life even of a well to do man. But no legislator who once was victorious is poor now. How is this!! All corruption, no other 'Charisma'.
