Should Student Take Part in Politics? The question whether or not students should take part in politics has given rise to much of controversy. There are different school of thought in relation to students-politics relationship. They have put forth their own theories in this context. Political pundits all over the world have freely expressed their views on the point, some in favour and some against.
Some pundits maintain that students should not take part in politics. Politics is dirty game. It is the last resort of the scoundrels. A students participation in politics can corrupt his mind. He will not be in a position to take interest in his studies. Participation in politics means good-bye to studies. Politics and studies cannot go hand in hand. The primary aim of a student should be to acquire knowledge. He must study properly and devotedly for learning those things which should prepare him for life. Naturally, if he starts taking interest in politics, he will not be able to do Justice to himself. He will neglect his studies. He will waste his time in fruitless pursuits. He will became a tool in the hands of selfish and professional politicians and ruin his career.
It is true that before independence, the national leaders did inspire the students to take part in politics. In 1920-21, Mahatama Gandhi called upon the students to participate in the non-cooperation movement. He asked them to discontinue their studies for one year. The students responded to the call of Mahatama. Similarly, during the 'Quit India', movement, the students joined hands with the national leaders. History stands a proof to the fact that with their youthful zeal and zest, the students fought in uprooting, eliminating and exterminating the foreign
thralldom and British Imperialism. But now the conditions in the country have changed. Now we are free. We have our own government, we have not to fight against any colonial power. As such, we should not instigate our students to take part in politics. Even students should realize this fact. They should leave the field of politics for the elders and take keen interest in their studies.
However, some pundits feel that the students must take active part in politics. According to them students and politics cannot be separated from each other. They feel that no harm is expected if the students take part in politics because politics is not a dirty game. Students are the leaders of tomorrow. If no political training is given to them during their stay in the educational institutions, they will prove utter failures when they enter the practical field of life. Moreover, in the modern world, politics has come to acquire a most important place and students cannot keep themselves aloof from it. This opinion also carries much weight. If we throw a glance on the world history, we shall find that students have been taking an active role in the world politics.
Let us try to judge this controversy in the context of India of today. Today, students participation in politics has taken a different shape. Their participation in politics is leading to chaotic conditions in the country. They are being exploited by selfish and professional politicians. They have grown indisciplined. They are engaging themselves in destructive activities. Daily strikes, dharnas, demonstrations and many other such activities coloured by politics have changed universities into dens of devils.
In my opinion, students should keep away from the filth of politics. They can fight for their genuine demands in a constitutional way. India needs the cooperation of the students in the social and not in the political filed.
