Modern man forgets Omar Khayyam who said "Dead yesterday and uncertain tomorrow-why fret about them when today be sweet." In his mad pursuit of beautiful future, the man of today mocks at William Henry Davies when we ask a modern man with a scientific and economic bent of mind to stand and stare, he ridicules the idea as an attempt to create a team of idlers and wasters. Man of this machine age contends that he, who asks to stand and stare, is only a romantic lover of nature, for away from the hard realities of modern life.
But man is a poor judge of his actions. He, miserably and unfortunately is oblivious to the grim reality that leisure is very essential in life. Leisure has always been the cherished privilege of man. Leisure does not mean idleness. True leisure is really the time which a man has earned by sheer dint of hard work. Leisure is constituted by those rarest moments of life which a man can really claim to be his own. Leisure is the quantitative and qualitative measurement of human life. Leisure is the supreme opportunity for man to transform himself into something more glorious than man.
It is true that necessity is the mother of invention, but necessity without leisure is the mother of privation. It was in his leisure time that Newton thought of the Law of Gravitation while enjoying the shade of an apple tree. Stephenson, during his moments of leisure was over-joyed to see the power of steam in the moving lid over a kettle, and gave the world the greatest invention of the 19th century. The great inventions of Edison where made in his leisure time. Had Archimedes got no moments of leisure, he would not have run, naked wild with joy, crying "ureka, ureka".
Leisure is worthier than Ali Baba's treasure. It enriches and lengthens life. It is the rich spring of freshness. Without leisure the human machine would collapse in a few hours. It is leisure alone that makes continuous race of the human heart possible. It during leisure time that we can enjoy the sweet company of our friends, can gratify our taste for art, music, dancing, poetry. literature and many other things. Lack of leisure poisons the springs of individual as well as collective human life. All narrowness of the heart pessimism of the soul are due to lack of leisure.
The cares and worries modern struggle some life have dehumanized us to a great extent. Today, every man seems to be living for himself only. Our sympathies are merely a lip service. We cannot retire grim realities of work-a-day life. We have completely forgotten that leisure is the sweet sauce of labour. R.L. Stevenson has said, "Extreme business whether at church, school, or market is a sign of deficient vitality, the man who is extremely busy is a nuisance to himself and to others. "Really:
"A poor life this if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare."
