The Problem of Unemployment

Perhaps, the most challenging problem before the government and the people of India today, is the problem of unemployment. According to reliable statistics, the present unemployment figure in the country is 40 million. It is expected to rise to 80 mullion by 1985. Every year the national resources create only 4 million employment possibilities. So, employment possibilities in the country are only one-tenth of the number of employment seekers. we can very well imagine how quickly the army of unemployed in the country is increasing.

This army includes a size-able number of highly educated and talented person. According to a news item, for the post of one clerk in any concern, more than 400 candidates apply. the applicants include graduates and post-graduates also. It is believed that about 6 to 7 million person are chronically unemployed.

The problem has two sides. There are educated unemployed and there are the uneducated unemployed. The actual number of unemployed persons is many times the number registered with various employment exchanges of the country. The unemployment in the urban areas is different in magnitude and nature from that of the rural areas. In urban areas, their are educated unemployed.

According to a rough estimate more that 7 million graduates are unemployed. In rural areas, there are unskilled labourers. A good percentage of 265 million labour force of the country lives in the rural areas. These lanourers are dependent on big land-lords for employment. They get employment for about six months and for the remaining six months they are mostly on the point of starvation. Being unskilled, such tanent-farmers do not get employment in industry. Thus, their condition is most deplorable.

It is being maintained that unemployment is a world wide problem. Even the most advanced countries of Europe and America are facing this problem. The unemployment figure in the U.S.A stands at 9.4 million. Similar is the case with England and France, Even socialist countries like Russia are also facing this problem. But, we are concerned with our own country. we must know the factors responsible for unemployment in our country. We should also try to find out a solution of the problem otherwise the consequences may be horrible. The first factor responsible for this problem in this country is our defective system of education.
