Prosperity makes people easy going, passive and listless. A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner, "The storms of adversity, like those of the ocean rouse the faculties; and excite adventure, prudence, skill and fortitude of the voyager." Adversity is rather the anvil on which the character of a person is forged. Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant. Without adversity the mettle of a man would really never shine out. the greatest achievements in the field of science, art and literature are all of those men who were impelled by adversity to strive on wards. In fact, without a trial, it is impossible for one to emerge a hero.
All great men of the world, Christ, Tolstoy, Buddha, Gandhi etc, adopted the discipline on adversity voluntarily imposing poverty on themselves. Lincoln, LB, Shashtri, Gledstone, Stalkin, etc, reached the zenith of sublimity after when they were tried in the furnace of adversity. Adversity strokes of the second World War made Churchill a hero.
Shakespeare is immortal, because of his tragedies. The 19th century English Romantic Literature is highly indebted to adversity which characterized the life of the Romantic poets. Adversity Sharpened Milton's imagination and his mastermind' Paradise Lost' stood unique. Shelley was the most imaginative and emotional poet because he fell upon the thorns of life and he bled. King Lear, once vain in glory, realized the intensity of sorrow when he was exposed to the wild elements by his tyrannical daughters. After the conquest of kalinga, Ashoka the great, realized the agony of slaughter and became a monk.
Adversity of prison life transformed Oscar Wild who then realized, "To deny one's own experiences is to put a lie into the lips of one's own life. It is no less than denial of a soul." Adversity goaded Swami Viveka Nand to shine in his Chicago Lectures.
It is only adversity which puts man on the rig track. His character is tried and tested on the touchstone of misfortunes. When miseries mock at him, he laugh; when sorrows surround him, he smiles; and when adversity addressees him, he grids up his loin and responds bravely. During this quest he acts, reacts, speaks, sing and writes. If he was Tansen in the state of privation, there was a spontaneous fountain of touching symphony; if he was Kalidas, there was the out-pouring of Shankuntla; if he was surdas, there was poignant Krishan Bhakti; if he was Ghalib, who can forget the sobs, the sighs and the shricks of his heart. If he was Edison, there were inventions of great utility.
Adversity of the touchstone which testifies the integrity of character. The rebuffs and the throe sublimate our being. The whips of miseries reawaken the slumbering heart. The fire of flurries rekindles the extinguished candle of our emotions. A man in adverse circumstances should realize that adversity is never permanent and is soon replaced by prosperity; for "If winter comes, can spring be for behind?" "The chamber of sorrow is the house of God." "Genuine morality is preserved only in the school of adversity."
Sweet indeed are the uses of Adversity. (The End).....
