Society and Science Part 2

As for the impact of science, the whole world is dreaming of a society where there will be no poverty in body or mind. Science and its twin brother, technology, have added a new dimension to human life by satisfying the physical and mental needs. Search of scientific truth, pleases mind and the manifestations of science through technology give overall comfort. One is linked with other just as body with the mind. And it is in the study of science and technology that a developed society has found new tools of thought as science has given to individual people a new vitality and a new dynamism in orienting his culture.

Success will lie in creating a scientific attitude from the early stages of training of the people, whether they develop their career in the field of science or not, because of the fact that science is playing a role in modelling our daily life from early morning with the news from any part of the world till retirement at night with a melodious song over the radio or an entertainment program on the television.

In many countries excessive development arising out of fast technological progress has led to soil erosion, drought, frequency and intensity of disastrous floods, etc. In urban areas burning of fuels pollutes the atmosphere. It is estimated that about 6 to 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide are daily sent to the atmosphere.

During the last 100 years the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air that we breathe has increased approximately by 20 per cent. There is also sewerage pollution of rivers due to industrial waste and its its reported that by the end of the 1980 decade the amount of polluted sewerage will increase by more than four times. At present, etc is about 1000 cubic km per year. It is obvious that these are some of the new problems which science has to solve for the existence of man.

"With every influx of light comes new danger" (Emerson). Will then the over-advancing frontiers of science always contribute to the material well being of mankind? The fear of destructive potentialities of science will disappear when moral values of our lives are raised by incorporation of social sciences (physiology, anthropology, sociology, political economy, etc.) in physical science so that the common goal of all human societies, i.e., prosperity and social equality is quickly attained.
